OCT
What is an OCT?
An OCT (optical coherence tomography) scan is an advanced imaging test that provides detailed, cross-sectional pictures of the layers of your retina and optic nerve. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye that captures images, while the optic nerve carries visual information from your eye to your brain. Unlike a standard eye examination, an OCT scan allows our optometrists to see beneath the surface, giving a detailed view of your eye’s internal structures. This makes it an excellent addition to your routine eye exam, allowing for a more thorough assessment of your eye health.
What can an OCT scan detect
OCT scans are particularly useful for detecting and monitoring a range of eye conditions at an early stage. These include glaucoma, where increased eye pressure can damage the optic nerve, macular degeneration, which affects central vision, and diabetic retinopathy, which is a complication of diabetes that can damage the retina.
The scan can also help identify subtle changes in the retina that might indicate other eye or systemic health issues. By detecting problems early, an OCT scan allows us to intervene promptly, helping protect your vision for the long term.
What to expect during an OCT scan
An OCT scan is quick, painless and non-invasive, usually taking just a few minutes. During your appointment, you’ll be asked to place your chin on a support while the machine captures images of your retina and optic nerve. There’s no need for eye drops unless your optometrist requires them for a more detailed view.
After the scan, your optometrist will review the images and explain the results, highlighting any areas of concern or monitoring progress if you have a known eye condition. The OCT can be added to your routine eye exam for a more comprehensive assessment.
